The Best Screen-Free Airplane Toys (That Actually Keep Kids Busy!)

There’s a very specific moment most parents dread on travel day.

That instant when the seatbelt sign dings, your toddler realizes they can’t get up, and you feel the first wave of panic coming on.

Yeah, that moment.

Flying with young kids can make you feel like you’re prepping for a space mission – snacks, wipes, and emotional support coffee all strapped in. But after surviving a few flights with my twins, I’ve learned that the secret to a smoother flight isn’t just snacks and patience – it’s the toys.

Not just any toys, though. Screen-free travel toys that actually keep them entertained, occupied, and happy – without creating chaos at 30,000 feet.

I’ve already written about how to travel with toddlers and young kids.

And today, I’m sharing exactly what I packed for our last flight – six toys that kept my toddlers calm, busy, and (mostly) meltdown-free. These are the real MVPs of our carry-on, plus my best tips for making travel days easier for little ones and you.

1. Galaxy Slime Kit – Surprisingly Not a Messy Disaster

Toy: LAWOHO 6 Pack Galaxy Slime Kit for Kids

I can already hear the collective gasp: You brought slime… on a plane?

Yes, I did. And no, it didn’t end in disaster.

There are so many limitations from TSA regarding what you can and cannot bring on an airplane- liquids need to be less than 3.4 oz, etc.

While slime is still considered a solid, these containers are still under the 3.4oz liquid limit, so there shouldn’t be any issues when going through airport security.

Just in case, you can find all the TSA laws and regulations here!

The LAWOHO Galaxy Slime Kit comes with cloud, butter, and clear slimes that are soft, stretchy, and genuinely low-mess. This kit came with a few small individual containers of slime, so each twin had their own “space slime.”

The textures are amazing, and the sparkly stars and planets kept them fascinated for probably two whole hours of the flight.

Mom tip:

  • Keep baby wipes handy (because toddlers will touch everything immediately after).
  • This works best during the “cruise” part of the flight when tray tables are down and turbulence is calm.

2. Sticker by Letter Book — Quiet, Creative, and So Satisfying

Toy: Brain Games – Sticker by Letter: Silly Snacks

This was such a good find.

It’s basically a color-by-number, but instead of coloring, your child sticks little numbered stickers to the matching spaces. The “Silly Snacks” version has smiling donuts and goofy tacos – totally toddler-approved.

What I loved most is that it’s screen-free, totally mess-free, and it makes kids feel like they’re creating art.

Both of my twins sat quietly, working away at their sticker pages- which allowed me to read my book in peace.

Mom tip:

  • Pre-peel the edges of each sticker sheet before the flight so little fingers can grab them easily.
  • Tear out a few pages and make individual mini packs — one for each child. Because sharing on an airplane? Not happening.

3. Magnetic Drawing Board — The Underrated Travel Hero

Toy: AYNAT FUN Magnetic Drawing Board for Kids & Toddlers

If you only buy one travel toy, let it be this one.

The AYNAT FUN Magnetic Drawing Board uses a stylus and tiny magnetic beads to create pictures that “click” into place – it’s quiet, mess-free, and endlessly reusable. You just swipe your hand across it to erase and start over.

It gives that same satisfaction as popping bubble wrap, but it’s educational and calming.

My twins were drawing faces, shapes, and “airplanes” (which were basically squiggles, but artistic nonetheless) for quite a while.

Mom tip:

  • Buy one per kid. Trust me – they will not share.

4. Play-Doh Starter Set – A Classic for a Reason

Toy: Play-Doh Starter Set 9-Piece Kit with Storage Tote

Play-Doh is one of those things I almost didn’t pack – and I’m so glad I did. It’s tactile, imaginative, and familiar, which is comforting for kids in a new environment.

This kit comes in a smaller size “travel” pack with all of the tools included.

What toddler doesn’t love play-doh?!

Mom tip:

  • Try and keep track of where the play-doh goes- it can get a bit messy if it sticks to the airplane carpet.

5. Dry-Erase Tracing Book – Learning Disguised as Fun

Toy: Write-On Wipe-Off Let’s Trace: Highlights Activity Book

This one’s for those calmer moments – maybe after snacks, when your kid’s winding down. It’s an educational dry-erase book where kids can trace letters, numbers, and shapes with a washable marker.

The best part? It feels “grown up” to them. My twins love anything that makes them feel like they’re doing “big kid” work.

Mom tip:

  • Swap the marker it comes with for a fine-tip dry-erase pen – easier to grip and less smudgy.
  • Keep a paper towel or tissue handy for quick wipes.

6. Puffy Sticker Playset – Small but Mighty

Toy: Paw Patrol Puffy Sticker Playset

Tiny, reusable, and endlessly entertaining. These puffy sticker playsets are genius for travel – they come with reusable stickers and background scenes so kids can make up their own stories.

The Paw Patrol one was a huge hit with my twins. They love Paw Patrol and playing pretend with the little characters.

The even just played with the stickers like they were mini-sized action figures.

Mom tip:

  • Store the stickers in a zip bag so they don’t get lost.
  • Rotate scenes mid-flight to keep things exciting.

The Secret to Surviving Long Flights with Kids

Even with great toys, keeping toddlers happy on a flight takes a bit of strategy. After a few trial-and-error trips, here’s what really helps:

✈️ 1. Rotate Toys Like a Pro

Don’t hand over the whole toy stash at once. Start with one or two, then bring out something new every 30–45 minutes. The element of surprise keeps them interested longer (and buys you those precious quiet moments).

✈️ 2. Make Snacks Part of the Plan

Think of snacks as scheduled entertainment. I pack little snack pouches and use them as “milestones” during the flight. For example:

  • Takeoff = snack #1
  • 30 minutes in = slime time
  • Mid-flight = sticker book
  • Descent = another snack + magnetic board

It helps break up the trip into manageable chunks – for them and for you.

✈️ 3. Choose the Right Seat

If you can, snag a window seat for your toddler. The view alone is a built-in distraction – clouds, tiny cars, “mountains” (aka shadows), and the magical moment when the plane takes off.

✈️ 4. Pack Smart

I like to pack each activity in its own zip pouch or reusable bag so I can easily grab one without rummaging through a bottomless backpack. When one activity is done, I tuck it back away and move on to the next.

✈️ 5. Lower Your Expectations (Just a Little)

Even with the best planning, kids will have moments – and that’s okay. Airplane seats are tight, naps are unpredictable, and snacks will absolutely end up on the floor. Give yourself grace and remember: you’re doing great.

✈️ 6. Keep a Screen Backup

Look, I’m all about screen-free travel, but I’m also realistic. Sometimes you just need that emergency episode of Ms. Rachel. Have a show or movie downloaded ahead of time – think of it as your parenting parachute.

Why Screen-Free Toys Are Worth It

Here’s the thing: screens are easy, but they don’t teach kids how to self-entertain, imagine, or focus for longer stretches. Screen-free travel toys encourage creativity, independence, and fine motor skills – and let’s be honest, there’s something really satisfying about watching your kids play happily without glowing tablets in their hands.

On our last flight, I noticed something unexpected — they actually played together. They took turns, shared ideas, and laughed. That alone made all the prep worth it.

Final Thoughts:

Traveling with toddlers isn’t about perfection – it’s about survival and small wins.

The toys I packed for this flight didn’t just keep my kids busy – they helped us all stay calm and connected. These were screen-free, low-mess, easy-to-pack, and 100% mom-approved.

So next time you’re flying with little ones, skip the endless screen time (at least for a while) and pack a few of these travel lifesavers. You might just get a few peaceful moments – maybe even long enough to finish your coffee (or wine).

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: prepared moms are powerful moms. And with the right toys in your bag, you’re basically unstoppable.
