Finding out I was pregnant with twins was never part of my plan.
Like many twin moms, I was shocked, nervous, and honestly—terrified. But after the shock wore off, excitement started to grow.
If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’ve just found out you’re expecting twins (or more!). Deep breath, mama. I’m here to be your big sister in this journey and share the best newborn twin must-haves that helped me survive the first few months.
These essentials for twins saved my sanity during the newborn stage—and I hope they help you too!
1. Boppy Pillows (x2)
If you’re wondering how to feed two babies at once, Boppy pillows are your best friend. I used two individual ones instead of a twin-feeding pillow because it gave me more flexibility.
Whether I was on the couch or floor, I could bottle-feed both babies at the same time. It also made it easy for someone else—like Grandma (aka GiGi)—to jump in and help.
These are the exact Boppy pillows that we had!
2. Zip-Up Pajama Sleepers
I have boy/girl twins and basically had all gender-neutral sleeper pajamas for their whole wardrobe. Why?
Zippers = lifesaver.
They’re so comfortable and warm for the baby to be in. I know there’s a whole bamboo pajama mom club out there, but I did not have the time, patience, or money to spend on bamboo pajamas for 2 newborns that I knew were going to be my first and last kids.
So most of the sleepers I purchased where from Amazon, Target, and Old Navy. Buying clothes for 2 newborns can get pricey- so I got everything in multi-packs. Scanning online for sales can also help with the price.
Late-night diaper changes are so much easier without dealing with snaps or buttons. Bonus: I didn’t have to separate “boy” and “girl” outfits—just grabbed and dressed.Buying clothes for 2 newborns can get pricey- so I bought everything in multi-packs. I constantly searched for sales as well.
Target seemed to have the best price for the zip-up pajamas! At the time of writing this, they’re $15 for a pack of 3.
3. Fisher-Price Play Mat
I still sing the songs in my head some times!
This is perfect for tummy and play time for newborns and infants. Plus the songs are pretty catchy. It has bright colors and some lights that catch babies attention. The mat itself is pretty soft so baby is comfortable when laying on a hard floor.
When the twins were newborns, they were both able to fit on the mat at the same time, but as they got older (cue maybe 4 months) They had to be on it one at a time.
Specifically for twins though, they could also be staggered on the mat. Or, put both babies back a bit so they can both see the lights and toys hanging. That way you shouldn’t need two of these!
It also grows with your baby as they grow! We love a multi-use toy.
4. Muslin Burp Cloths
I never thought I’d care about a burp cloth. I just thought you could use any old towel or something like that when burping the baby. Which could be the case for some people (obviously no judgement here) but these burp cloths are amazing.
They’re so soft, absorbent, easy to wash, convenient to have everywhere. The house, car, diaper bag, next to your bed. Everywhere had a burp cloth!
Spit up? Burp cloth. Small mess? Burp cloth. Need something to put under the baby when changing? Burp cloth.
You can never have too many burp cloths!
5. Diaper Backpack
With two newborns, there’s a lot to carry. Twice the amount of clothes, diapers, bottles, and formula.
I loved having a backpack because it made me hands free and the weight sat on my back so I didn’t feel like I had to constantly set it down because it was heavy.
It also transitions nicely as you’re moving away from having a diaper bag.
This isn’t the exact one I used- but it’s pretty similar with all the same compartments and style!
6. Electric Nasal Aspirator
These were my first kids and I had no idea how much boogers came out of such small beings. When we left the hospital, they gave me those little bulb nose suckers and I thought I’d just be fine with that.
I thought wrong. I really was clueless when it came to newborn babies but that bulb did nothing for my babies. It might have been user error (because again, I really was clueless)
This electric one was way more powerful and cleared the babies noses in almost no time. I was shocked to see what came out of such a small nose.
Afterwards, it was super easy to clean- which was needed during those sleepless newborn days and nights. The small sections of it were just big enough to fit a q-tip for easy cleaning.
The noise that it makes while sucking is minimal and the babies weren’t afraid of it at all. There’s different suction levels and even a song that can play.
They actually liked the little song that you have the option of playing instead of just hearing the suction!
This is the one with the nice song and worked perfectly for us.
7. Baby Bouncers (x2) – Safe Space to Set Babies Down
When the babies weren’t sleeping and I needed somewhere to put them to have my hands free- having these were great!
The babies loved the slight vibration and I loved the thought of them having a safe space.
This is super light weight to carry around the house if needed– but is comfortable and fun for the baby.
8. Lounger
You don’t have to spend hundreds of comfortable loungers for your babies.
I got ours off of Amazon and the babies were very comfortable.
They were also super easy to take the cover off and clean if they got messy- which with 2 newborns that’s bound to happen!
Always remember to never let the baby out of your sight in the lounger and to make sure they’re sleeping safely at all times.
I liked how these loungers open up at the bottom- when the babies got a little longer I opened the lounger up and it gave them more space.
9. A Double Stroller
Strollers are so expensive! Add in 2 car seats on top of that and you’re spending a pretty penny on everything.
I spent a lot of time researching online because I really wanted an affordable double stroller and car seat system. This stroller had everything that I wanted and needed….. AND the price is pretty decent for a 3 piece set.
The car seats easily snapped into the bases in the car, and then effortlessly snapped out of the car and into the base of the stroller. The stroller can also grow with the kids because when the they got bigger, the stroller has “big kid” seats that you can use without the car seats.
I also love how this stroller is long and not wide. It’s really easy to maneuver in doorways and on busy sidewalks. I took this stroller running on flat paved trails and really didn’t have any issues with pushing. Although, I will say that it’s pretty stiff when going over bumps and rocks- we never really had issues with that though.
The drink holder and small compartment by the push handle came in clutch when carrying multiple drinks, storing car keys, chapstick, or even some small snacks.
My only downsides to this stroller: My twins were too big for the car seats around 5 months (they were pretty big babies) so I ended up having to purchase two completely new car seats sooner than I expected. And my twins liked to kick each other when sitting in the “big kid” seats (sibling fighting right?)
This whole stroller set comes with the base stroller with big kid seats, the car seat bases, AND the car seats.
