As a mom, I know how tempting it is to hand your toddler a tablet just to get 10 minutes of peace. Believe me, I’ve been there. But if you’re looking for screen-free activities that actually work and don’t result in meltdowns or you cleaning paint off the ceiling, then keep reading.
I’m one of those “strict” moms who limits screen time. My twins didn’t even watch anything until they were about 2 years old. Granted, I would leave the TV on and watch the news or something “boring” for kids.
Now that they’re pushing 3 years old, they’ll watch one movie or show on the weekends. But that’s about it. Now they honestly have no real interest in screens- they’d rather play outside and get dirty.
This guide is more for activities, but if you’re looking for screen-free toys that your toddler will actually play with, I have a blog post on our most highly used toys!
So, whether you’re trying to cut down on screen time, travel with toddlers, or just need a few ideas to keep them engaged during those witching hours, I’ve rounded up real-life tested activities that will actually keep your toddler busy (and your sanity intact).
Why Go Screen-Free?
Before we dive in, let’s talk about the benefits of screen-free play:
- 💡 Boosts creativity and imagination
- 🧠 Encourages cognitive and language development
- 🤸 Improves motor skills
- 👫 Supports social and emotional growth
- 😌 Reduces overstimulation and meltdowns
It’s not about banning screens forever- but offering enough engaging options that your toddler doesn’t immediately beg for a screen every 15 minutes.
1. Sensory Bins That Take 5 Minutes to Set Up

Yes, even if you’re not a Pinterest mom.
Try this: Fill a plastic bin with dry rice, dried beans, or kinetic sand. Add scoops, small containers, and little toys like animal figurines or cars. Boom—30 minutes of focused toddler magic.
👉 Mom tip: Lay down a tablecloth or shower curtain liner underneath for easy cleanup.
I wrote about my top 5 sensory bins here!
2. Stickers and Washi Tape Galore

It’s wild how long a toddler will sit and play with stickers and washi tape. Give them a notebook, a sheet of stickers, and some colorful tape and let them go wild.
Bonus: Great for fine motor skills!
Here are some stickers and tape we love in our house:
- This reusable sticker book is great for screen free time AND travel.
- This Washi tape is so much fun to play with!
3. DIY Obstacle Course

Got couch cushions? You’re halfway there.
Bought into the Nugget couch craze? Same. (well, the knock-off brand of course) – but this is perfect.
Try this: Create a mini obstacle course using pillows, chairs, laundry baskets, and tunnels (if you have one). Have them crawl under, climb over, and hop around. It burns energy and keeps them off your furniture (mostly).
4. Water Play

You don’t need a pool for this.
- Fill a baking tray or bin with water
- Add measuring cups, spoons, or bath toys
- Let them splash and pour
For outdoor play, add bubbles or food coloring and call it a toddler science experiment.
For a more sophisticated water play, my kids LOVE this sink/faucet combo to wash their dishes!
5. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Perfect for backyard time or a walk around the block. Make a list or draw pictures of things for them to find:
- A rock
- A flower
- A bird
- A stick
- Something red
Turn it into a little adventure, and you’ll all get some fresh air! This is also fun to remind YOU to slow down and pay attention to the little things in life.
6. Toddler-Friendly Art Station

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be crafty. And you don’t have to get too messy.
Simple ideas:
- Chunky crayons and a roll of kraft paper
- Watercolor paints and cotton balls
- Dot markers and coloring books
- Mess-free paint in a ziplock bag taped to a window
Rotate materials weekly to keep it exciting!
Mess free coloring is a life saver over here.
7. Pretend Play Stations

Create easy dramatic play setups like:
- Doctor’s office (use band-aids and stuffed animals)
- Grocery store (empty food boxes + reusable bags)
- Construction site (blocks + toy tools)
- Restaurant (toy kitchen + a notepad for “taking orders”)
Your toddler will love being “in charge” of something for once! Kids also love to have “jobs”, especially service jobs.
This is the play kitchen that my twins love!
9. Build Something Together

Use blocks, Mega Bloks, magnetic tiles, or even empty boxes to build towers, castles, or obstacle courses. Toddlers love to destroy what you build (which is honestly half the fun).
Pro tip: Challenge them to build taller than you.
10. Dance Party

Need to reset the mood? Crank up the toddler tunes or your favorite Disney soundtrack and have a dance-off. Let your toddler pick the music sometimes- even if it means hearing “Baby Shark” for the 842nd time. 😵💫
Dance parties are great for releasing energy, bonding, and laughing so hard your stomach hurts.
My kids love dancing to the music of their Tonies box.
11. Simple Toddler Chores

Yes, chores can be fun!
Give them a spray bottle with water and a cloth to “clean” windows or their play kitchen. Let them match socks or move laundry from the basket into the washer.
They feel helpful. You get help. It’s a win-win.
12. Books, Books, and More Books

Reading time can be magical- especially when it becomes a habit.
- Keep a rotating selection of books in a bin or basket
- Let them choose what to read
- Add silly voices or ask them what’s happening in the pictures
And yes, board books still count even if you’re reading “Brown Bear” for the 8,000th time.
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need a Perfect Plan
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel or buy a million things to keep your toddler engaged without a screen. It’s all about offering new, fun, and developmentally appropriate activities; and giving yourself grace when some days still feel like chaos.
