1. Create a Realistic Budget That Works for You

If you’re wondering how to save money as a mom, step one is understanding where your money is going. Creating a family budget doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s just a way to track spending and prioritize what matters most.

How to get started:

  • List all sources of income
  • Track monthly expenses (fixed and flexible)
  • Identify areas to cut back
  • Set savings goals

Honestly- use AI to your advantage! I used ChatGPT to create a budget for me and it showed me where and how to manage my money and expenses.

I also know that ‘budget’ can be a scary word. When planning out your finances, be sure to add some wiggle room for those random impulses and spur of the moment things that come up. That way it won’t feel like you “failed” if you go over budget for the month.

With that said though, obviously be responsible with the flexibility. Make sure your money is going to bills, necessities, and savings first.

2. Meal Plan to Save Money on Groceries

Groceries are one of the biggest expenses for families. Meal planning helps you avoid waste, cut back on takeout, and save hundreds of dollars a month.

Tips for frugal meal planning:

  • Shop your pantry first
  • Plan meals around sales and coupons
  • Cook in bulk and freeze leftovers
  • Keep a few cheap, easy recipes on rotation

ChatGPT is another great resource here! Plug in random ingredients that is in your fridge and pantry, and it can help you create meals that you would never even think of.

My family likes to eat pizza every Friday night! Instead of ordering out like we used to do, I turned it into a toddler activity!

I buy premade pizza crust, sauce, cheese, and pepperoni and my toddlers help me make the pizzas.

Not only do I save money, but I create a fun activity for the kids, and teach them about cooking. They love to see their creations!

3. Embrace Thrift Stores, Hand-Me-Downs, and of Course, SALES

Kids grow like weeds. Their clothes, shoes, and toys often don’t last long and it can feel like you’re constantly buying “new” things. Shopping secondhand is one of the smartest ways to save money as a mom.

Where to look:

  • Local thrift stores and consignment shops
  • Facebook Marketplace and mom swap groups
  • Hand-me-downs from friends and family
  • Half-off sales from stores

I’m always getting emails from Old Navy about their multiple 50% sales. With toddler clothes, I can get shirts and pants for about $4 – $9.

Walmart also has pretty cute toddler clothes! You can get t-shirts for $3.98 (which I think is a steal).

4. Cut Out Unnecessary Subscriptions and Expenses

Take a good look at your monthly spending and cancel anything you don’t truly use or need. This could include streaming services, subscription boxes, or unused gym memberships.

Try this:
Print out last month’s bank statement and highlight every non-essential expense. Then ask yourself: did this make my life better?

🎯 Trim the extras, but keep the things that bring you joy. Your mental health matters too.

5. Use Cashback and Rewards Apps

Want to save money while you spend it? Use cashback apps and rewards programs to earn free gift cards, discounts, or actual cash.

Top money-saving apps for moms:

  • Rakuten (online shopping)
  • Ibotta (grocery and retail)
  • Fetch Rewards (scan receipts)
  • Honey (browser extension for coupons)

Loyalty programs like Walmart and Target can also save and accrue money as well!

6. Automate Your Savings

Even small savings add up over time. Automating your savings helps you stay consistent without having to think about it.

Try this:

  • Set up a weekly transfer to your savings account
  • Use your bank’s “round-up” feature to save spare change
  • Create separate savings buckets for emergencies, holidays, or big purchases

Even just a little but of cash at a time can add up.

If you don’t already have a high-yield savings account… run don’t walk to sign up! They’re typically free to have an account. If you’re going to have money sit in an account, you might as well make money from it.

7. Avoid Mom Guilt Spending

We all do it- buy something out of guilt to make up for a missed moment, meltdown, or just pure exhaustion. But impulse spending often adds stress later.

Instead:

  • Budget for “fun money” or small treats
  • Focus on quality time, not stuff
  • Practice self-compassion- you’re already doing your best

Kids really don’t need that many toys to be happy. Heck, most kids will be happy with a crayon and cardboard box! Being present is the best present.

8. Take Advantage of Free Community Resources

One of the best-kept secrets? Free stuff for moms and kids! Libraries, local events, and community centers often offer amazing (and free!) opportunities.

Look for:

  • Free library programs (storytime, crafts, toy lending)
  • Local Facebook groups for events and swaps
  • Seasonal freebies like outdoor concerts or family nights

Most towns have local meet-up mom groups on Facebook. I can guarantee there’s other moms looking for free activities for their kids as well! You just gotta find them.

9. Create a Mom Swap Circle

Connect with other moms and start a swap group where you trade clothes, toys, books, and even babysitting services.

Benefits:

  • Saves money on things you’d otherwise buy
  • Builds community and support
  • Cuts down on clutter

The saying “it takes a village” applies in more ways than one.

10. Start a Simple Side Hustle for Extra Income

If you’re looking to grow your budget beyond just saving, consider starting a mom-friendly side hustle.

Ideas for moms:

  • Sell digital products or printables (like travel packs or meal planners!)
  • Offer freelance services (writing, design, virtual assistance)
  • Start a blog (yes, you can monetize it over time)
  • Flip thrifted finds online

Printify can help print your online creations on actual physical products without having to stock pile inventory in your basement!
